I spent the better part of my career deep inside the cruise industry &#8212; and I mean that literally and professionally.<\/p>\n<p>I started in Food and Beverage, working my way up through the ranks until I reached Food and Beverage Director on cruise ships. People outside the industry are sometimes surprised to learn that Food and Beverage is not just one department among many &#8212; it is the single largest department on a cruise ship, accounting for more crew members than any other division onboard, and responsible for generating the highest onboard revenue of all departments. We are talking about multiple restaurants, bars, room service, buffets, specialty dining, beverage programs, and everything in between &#8212; all running simultaneously, around the clock, at sea. And unlike a land-based restaurant that can call a supplier on short notice, everything you need has to be planned, ordered, and loaded before the ship leaves port. Inventory management at sea is a discipline of its own &#8212; you either get it right before you sail or you improvise in the middle of the ocean. If you know the industry, you know that the F&amp;B Director role touches everything &#8212; restaurant operations, bar management, crew supervision, guest satisfaction scores, cost control, inventory, provisioning, you name it. I have evaluated crew performance, mentored people through the ranks, and watched good candidates get passed over for completely avoidable reasons. Hiring on cruise ships is done shoreside &#8212; through manning agencies and HR departments &#8212; and understanding how that process works is something most applicants get completely wrong. I know exactly what managers are looking for once crew arrives onboard, and more importantly, I know what quietly kills a good application before it ever reaches a decision maker.<\/p>\n<p>I also served as Executive Officer on cruise ships &#8212; a role that sits at the intersection of operations, administration, and senior shipboard management. That position gave me a perspective on how ships are actually run that goes well beyond any single department.<\/p>\n<p>Then came a chapter I did not entirely expect.<\/p>\n<p>At a certain point in my career I was recruited &#8212; specifically because of my operational insider knowledge &#8212; to help with the startup development and distribution of <strong>Fidelio Cruise Software<\/strong> at <strong>Micros-Fidelio<\/strong>, now part of <strong>Oracle<\/strong>. They needed someone who actually understood how ships worked from the inside, and that is exactly what I brought to the table. Over nearly nine years I held roles as Director of Business Development and Finance and Director of Operations. If you have ever worked on a major cruise ship, there is a very good chance you used software my team helped build, sell, and roll out fleet-wide. That chapter gave me something rare &#8212; a clear view of how the cruise industry operates not just on the ship, but at the corporate, financial, and technology level as well.<\/p>\n<p>I am now retired and living in Thailand.
