It has restaurants, bars, hotels, entertainment venues, a medical center, a power plant, and a full administrative operation — all running simultaneously, around the clock, in the middle of the ocean. To manage all of that, ships are divided into distinct departments, each with its own chain of command, career path, and lifestyle reality.

Knowing which department fits your background and personality is the first step toward a successful application. So let me walk you through each one.

1. Food and Beverage

This is the department I know best — and it is the biggest one on the ship.

Food and Beverage is responsible for every restaurant, bar, buffet, room service operation, specialty dining venue, and beverage program onboard. On a large ship that can mean dozens of outlets running simultaneously, serving thousands of guests and crew every single day.

What most people do not realize is that F&B is not just one department — it is a collection of sub-departments including restaurants, bars, buffet operations, room service, and beverage management, all sitting under one umbrella. It employs more crew members than any other division onboard and generates the highest onboard revenue of all departments.

Entry points are plentiful — waiter, bar server, buffet attendant, assistant bartender. Career progression is clear and can move quickly for people who perform well and understand the shipboard environment.

Best fit for: Hospitality professionals, restaurant and bar staff, hotel food service workers.

2. Housekeeping

Housekeeping is the second largest department on a cruise ship and is responsible for all guest cabin maintenance, public area cleaning, laundry operations, and tailoring services.

The roles within Housekeeping are more varied than most people expect. Beyond the well known Cabin Steward role, the department also includes Public Area Cleaners responsible for maintaining all guest-facing spaces throughout the ship, Laundry Attendants managing the massive volume of linen, uniforms, and guest laundry generated daily at sea, and Tailors who handle uniform repairs and alterations for the entire crew.

The Cabin Steward role is one of the most accessible entry points into the cruise industry and one of the best tipping positions onboard. It is physically demanding, the hours are long, and the work is relentless — particularly on turnaround days when the entire ship changes guests simultaneously. But for the right person it is a genuinely rewarding career with clear upward mobility.

Career progression in Housekeeping starts at Cabin Steward and moves through supervisory roles all the way up to Chief Housekeeper — one of the most senior hotel operations positions on the ship, responsible for the entire accommodation and public area experience across the vessel.

Best fit for: Hotel housekeeping staff, resort accommodation workers, laundry and linen professionals, tailors, anyone with a strong work ethic and exceptional attention to detail.

3. Deck Department

The Deck Department is responsible for the navigation, safety, and physical operation of the ship itself. This is the maritime side of cruise ship work — Officers, Able Seamen, Bosuns, and the Captain all fall under this department.

Entry into the Deck Department requires formal maritime qualifications and certifications. This is not a department you walk into from a hospitality background — it requires dedicated maritime training and licensing.

Best fit for: Qualified maritime professionals, nautical academy graduates, experienced seafarers with STCW and officer certifications.

4. Engine Department

Similar to the Deck Department, the Engine Department is responsible for all mechanical, electrical, and technical systems that keep the ship running — propulsion, power generation, air conditioning, plumbing, and everything in between.

Again this requires formal maritime engineering qualifications. It is highly skilled, well paid, and largely invisible to guests — but absolutely critical to the operation of the ship.

Best fit for: Marine engineers, electrical engineers, qualified technical professionals with maritime certifications.

5. Guest Services, Purser and Finance

Guest Services — traditionally known as the Purser’s Department — is one of the most diverse and often underestimated departments on a cruise ship. It covers far more than just the front desk.

On the guest-facing side, Guest Service Agents handle passenger embarkation and disembarkation, currency exchange, complaints, general inquiries, and a wide range of administrative functions. English fluency is essential and a second language is a significant advantage. The work is high pressure, particularly on port days and turnaround days.

What many people do not know is that the Purser’s Department also carries significant financial and administrative responsibility. Finance Managers and Hotel Controllers oversee the financial operations of the entire ship — revenue tracking, cost control, cash management, and financial reporting. These are senior roles requiring strong accounting and finance backgrounds and are among the most professionally demanding positions in the hotel division.

The department also includes Shore Excursion staff on many cruise lines — either as part of the Purser’s operation or as a standalone department depending on the cruise line. Shore Excursions may be operated directly by the cruise line or through a concessionaire arrangement, so it is always worth checking the specific structure of your target line before applying.

Best fit for: Hotel front desk staff, customer service professionals, airline check-in agents, accountants, finance professionals, hotel controllers, shore excursion specialists.

6. Entertainment and Activities

The Entertainment Department covers everything from production shows and live music to trivia nights, deck parties, and youth programs. It includes Cruise Directors, Entertainment Staff, Performers, Musicians, and Activity Coordinators.

This is a diverse and competitive department. Performance roles require genuine professional talent and are filled through specialist entertainment agencies. Activity and recreation roles are more accessible for people with strong hospitality or sports and leisure backgrounds.

Best fit for: Performers, musicians, activity coordinators, youth workers, hospitality generalists with outgoing personalities.

7. Spa, Fitness, Photography, Retail and Concessions

The Spa, Fitness Center, Photography, Casino, and Retail outlets on most cruise ships are operated by third-party concession companies rather than the cruise line itself. This means they have completely separate hiring processes, contracts, and career structures.

If you want to work in any of these areas you need to apply directly to the concessionaire — not the cruise line. Spa positions are typically managed by companies like Steiner Leisure, fitness instructors often fall under the same spa concessionaire, ship photographers are managed by specialist maritime photography companies, and casino roles are handled through specialist casino operators. Each has its own career path and hiring process.

Best fit for: Beauty therapists, fitness instructors, professional photographers, casino dealers, retail professionals.

8. Crew Services — The Department Guests Never See

This is one area that almost never gets mentioned in cruise career guides — and it should.

Every cruise ship has a dedicated operation focused entirely on the welfare, administration, and management of the crew itself. This includes Crew Pursers who handle crew documentation, payroll, and administrative needs, Human Resources staff responsible for crew relations, performance management, and compliance, Learning and Development Managers who oversee crew training, onboarding programs, and professional development onboard, and Crew Welfarestaff who manage crew recreational facilities, crew bar operations, and the overall wellbeing of the hundreds of people living and working onboard.

These are professional roles requiring HR, training, administration, or hospitality backgrounds and are often overlooked by job seekers who only focus on the guest-facing side of the ship. If you have an HR, training, or administrative background and want to work at sea, this is a very viable and often underserved entry point.

Best fit for: HR professionals, learning and development specialists, payroll administrators, welfare officers, crew relations specialists.

So Which Department Is Right for You?

The honest answer is — the one that matches your existing skills and experience most closely. Cruise lines are not training schools. They hire people who can hit the ground running from day one of their contract.

If you have a hotel or restaurant background, F&B or Housekeeping are your most realistic entry points. If you have front desk, finance or customer service experience, Guest Services is a natural fit. If you have maritime qualifications, Deck or Engine are your world. And if you have a performance or activities background, Entertainment is where you belong. Do not overlook Crew Services either — if you have HR, training, or administrative experience it is a genuinely strong entry point that most candidates never consider.

The biggest mistake is trying to reinvent yourself for a cruise ship application. Lead with what you already know — and let your experience do the talking.

In the next post I am going to go deep on the department I know best — Food and Beverage — and give you a real insider look at what the career path actually looks like from entry level all the way to F&B Director.

See you in the next one.

— Wolfgang

Founder, CruiseCareer Pro | Retired Executive Officer & F&B Director | Former Director, Micros-Fidelio (Oracle) Fidelio Cruise Software

📩 Get in Touch

Have questions about getting hired on a cruise ship, or want your application personally reviewed — at no cost?
