Beautiful ports. Exotic destinations. The romance of life at sea.

What you rarely find is an honest account of what it actually looks like day to day — the long hours, the shared cabins, the months away from home, and the mental and emotional realities of living and working in a confined space with hundreds of colleagues from around the world.

I am not going to scare you off. I spent decades at sea and I loved it. But I am going to give you the real picture — because the candidates who go in with realistic expectations are the ones who thrive, come back contract after contract, and build real careers. The ones who go in with romanticized expectations often do not make it through their first contract.

So let’s talk about what life on a cruise ship actually looks like.

Your Contract

Cruise ship contracts typically run between four and nine months depending on your position, your cruise line, and your department.

After your contract ends you go home on leave — usually for one to three months — before signing on again for your next contract. This rotation is the rhythm of a cruise career. You are either onboard or on leave. There is very little in between.

What this means practically is that you need to be prepared for extended time away from home, family, and everything familiar. For some people this is completely manageable. For others it is genuinely difficult. Be honest with yourself about which category you fall into before you sign anything.

Your Cabin

Let’s be direct about this — crew cabins on cruise ships are small. Very small.

Most crew members share a cabin with one other person, sometimes two depending on the ship and the rank. The cabin will have bunk beds, a small wardrobe, a desk, and a bathroom. That is essentially it.

As you move up the ranks the cabin situation improves. Senior crew and officers typically have single occupancy cabins which are still small by land standards but feel like a significant upgrade after sharing.

The key mindset shift is this — your cabin is where you sleep, not where you live. Most of your waking hours are spent working, eating in the crew mess, or socializing in crew areas. Once you accept that the cabin is just a place to rest, it stops feeling like a limitation.

Your Working Hours

Cruise ship working hours are regulated by the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) — an international framework that sets clear limits on how many hours crew members can work and mandates minimum rest periods. Every cruise line operating under a reputable flag state is required to comply with these regulations.

In practical terms most crew members work an average of around ten hours per day — some days less, some days more depending on the operational demands of the ship. There are weekly maximums that cannot be exceeded and mandatory rest hours that must be observed. These are not optional — they are legal requirements that cruise lines take seriously.

That said, the nature of shipboard work means the schedule is rarely a neat nine to five. Service departments like F&B work across split shifts — mornings, afternoons, and evenings — which means your working day can feel long even when the total hours are within the regulated limits. Understanding and accepting that rhythm before you join is important.

The MLC regulations exist to protect crew welfare and they genuinely make a difference. If you are joining a reputable cruise line you can expect your working hours to be managed responsibly within those boundaries.

Port Days

Port days are one of the genuine perks of cruise ship life — but they look very different depending on your role and your schedule.

Officers and senior crew with more flexible schedules often have meaningful time ashore in ports. Entry-level crew in operational departments like F&B and Housekeeping frequently have limited port time because the ship’s operations continue regardless of whether you are in Santorini or at sea.

On turnaround days — when the ship changes its entire passenger complement in a single morning — there is often no port time at all. Turnaround days are the most intense operational days of any cruise and everyone is working.

Manage your expectations around ports. The destinations are real and occasionally spectacular. But they are a bonus, not a guarantee.

Money — What You Actually Earn

Cruise ship salaries vary enormously depending on your position, your cruise line, and your nationality. Entry-level positions in F&B and Housekeeping are among the lower base salaries on the ship — but they are supplemented significantly by gratuities, which on many cruise lines are pooled and distributed among guest-facing crew.

For crew in tipping positions the gratuity income can substantially exceed the base salary. A Cabin Steward or Waiter on a major cruise line can earn significantly more than an equivalent land-based role when gratuities are factored in — and with near-zero living expenses for the duration of the contract.

Technical and officer positions carry higher base salaries and are less dependent on gratuities. Finance, HR, and senior management roles are salaried positions with no gratuity component.

One practical reality — you will have very little opportunity to spend money while onboard. Most crew members end their contracts with a meaningful amount of savings, which is one of the genuine financial advantages of cruise ship work compared to equivalent land-based roles.

The Social Reality

Living and working with the same people in a confined space for months at a time is an experience unlike anything most people have had before.

The social environment on a cruise ship is intense. Friendships form quickly and deeply. Conflicts, when they happen, have nowhere to go. Your colleagues are also your neighbors, your dining companions, and in many cases your only social outlet for months at a time.

The crew community on most ships is genuinely diverse — you will work alongside people from the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and everywhere in between. That diversity is one of the most enriching aspects of cruise ship life for most people. It requires adaptability, cultural awareness, and a genuine openness to people who are different from you.

The crew bar, the crew mess, and the crew recreational areas become the social center of your world. The quality of those spaces varies enormously by cruise line and by ship — and experienced crew members will tell you it makes a real difference to quality of life onboard.

Internet and Communication

This has improved significantly in recent years but it is still worth being realistic about.

Most cruise lines provide crew with some level of internet access — either through a crew Wi-Fi allowance or through purchasing data packages. The speeds vary, the reliability varies, and the cost can add up. Video calls home are possible but not always seamless, particularly in the middle of the ocean.

If staying digitally connected is important to you — for family reasons, for running a side business, for anything else — factor this into your decision. It is manageable but it requires planning.

Is It Worth It?

For the right person — absolutely yes.

Cruise ship work offers something genuinely rare — the opportunity to earn good money, travel the world, develop professionally at an accelerated pace, and be part of a community unlike anything you will find on land. The people who thrive at sea are those who go in with realistic expectations, a genuine work ethic, and the emotional resilience to handle the demands of the lifestyle.

The people who struggle are almost always those who underestimated the hours, overestimated the port time, or were not prepared for the social intensity of life in a confined space.

Go in with your eyes open — and you will be fine.

In the next post I am going to talk about something most cruise job seekers never think about — why your application gets ignored before anyone even reads it, and exactly what you can do to fix it.

See you in the next one.

— Wolfgang

Founder, CruiseCareer Pro | Retired Executive Officer & F&B Director | Former Director, Micros-Fidelio (Oracle) Fidelio Cruise Software

📩 Get in Touch

Have questions about getting hired on a cruise ship, or want your application personally reviewed — at no cost?
