Life like working on a cruise ship means small cabins, long days, meals with the same 40-plus nationalities you work beside, and a rhythm of life that has almost nothing in common with a normal office job. It is demanding, it is social, and for most people who stick with it, it is worth it.<\/span><\/p>\n

I spent decades at sea, most of it as an Executive Officer and F&B Director leading a team of over 700 crew. People ask me constantly what shipboard life is actually like, past the highlight reels and cruise line marketing. Here is the honest version.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where You Sleep and Eat<\/h3>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Crew cabins are small, usually shared with one or two roommates depending on your position and department. Do not expect a suite. Expect a bunk, a shared bathroom in most cases, and a locker for your things. Officers and senior staff generally get more space and sometimes a private cabin, but the majority of crew share.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meals happen in the crew mess, separate from guest dining rooms, and the food reflects the international crew you are living alongside. Large ships carry crew from more than 40 nationalities, so the crew mess usually serves a wide mix of cuisines to match. It is one of the more underrated parts of shipboard life: you eat dishes from a dozen countries in a single week without ever leaving the ship.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your Working Hours<\/h3>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Working hours on a cruise ship are regulated by the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), which sets weekly maximums and mandatory rest periods for every crew member. In practice, most departments average around 10 hours a day, some more and some less depending on the role and the day. Turnaround days, when a ship changes over its full guest complement, tend to be the longest and most intense days of any contract.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not a 9-to-5 job. But it is also not the unregulated, unlimited-hours job that rumors sometimes suggest. There are real limits, and reputable cruise lines take them seriously because compliance is checked and enforced.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Social Side of Shipboard Life<\/h3>\n

You live where you work, which means your colleagues are also your neighbors, your friends, and sometimes your closest support system thousands of miles from home. This is one of the most surprising parts of life on a cruise ship for first-timers: the intensity of the friendships that form when you are working, eating, and living alongside the same people every day for months at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Crew contracts typically run 6 to 9 months, followed by a period of leave before the next contract if you choose to return. Shore leave in port is common but not guaranteed every stop; it depends on your role, your department's workload that day, and ship operations. Many crew use port days to explore, shop, or simply get off the ship for a few hours of normal life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Internet access has improved dramatically over the years and most ships now offer crew Wi-Fi packages, though speeds and pricing vary by cruise line. Staying connected with home is far easier today than it was even five years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n
