You cleared the first filter. But a lot of candidates freeze up or underperform here — not because they are unqualified, but simply because they did not know what was coming.

So let me walk you through what a cruise ship interview actually looks like, what the people across from you are evaluating, and how to give yourself the best possible chance of walking away with a contract offer.

Who Is Interviewing You?

In most cases, your first interview will not be with the cruise line. It will be with a manning agency — a specialist recruitment company that screens candidates on the cruise line’s behalf.

I have written about manning agencies before, but it is worth saying again here: the agency does the heavy lifting. They filter out candidates who are not realistic fits before anyone at the cruise line ever sees your file. So treat the agency interview as seriously as you would treat a direct interview with the cruise line itself. It is not a formality.

If you pass the agency screening, some cruise lines will conduct a second interview — particularly for supervisory, management, or specialist roles. Entry-level positions are often hired on the agency’s recommendation alone.

It Will Almost Certainly Be Online

The vast majority of cruise ship interviews take place by video call — Zoom, Teams, or WhatsApp depending on the agency and region. This is entirely normal. Crew come from dozens of countries, and no one is flying you in for a screening interview.

Take your setup seriously.

Test your internet connection beforehand. A frozen screen or choppy audio is a bad first impression. Find a quiet space — a barking dog or traffic noise in the background does not help your case. Use a clean, plain background. A blank wall works perfectly. Dress professionally from the waist up at minimum. Yes, you are at home. It still matters.

And have your CV in front of you — but do not read from it. Know your own experience.

What They Are Really Looking For

Here is the part most guides get wrong. They tell you to memorize answers to common interview questions. That matters, but it is secondary.

What experienced interviewers in the cruise industry are actually assessing is something harder to fake.

Service orientation. Can you give a genuine example of a time you enjoyed making someone else’s experience better? If you struggle to answer that, it shows. Cruise ships run on hospitality, and passengers sense immediately when crew are going through the motions.

Flexibility and resilience. Life on a ship is unpredictable. You will be asked how you handle pressure, unexpected situations, changing schedules. They are not looking for a perfect answer — they are looking for someone who does not fall apart.

Realistic expectations. I cannot count the number of interviews where a candidate clearly thought working on a cruise ship was an extended holiday. It is not. It is a job. A demanding one, on long contracts, away from home. Interviewers probe for this. If you romanticize the lifestyle, it shows immediately.

Teamwork and communication. You will be living and working with a thousand people from sixty different nationalities in a confined space. English language ability is also assessed here — not perfection, but functional proficiency.

Common Questions You Will Be Asked

There is no universal script, but these come up again and again across the industry:

Tell me about yourself and your work experience.

Why do you want to work on a cruise ship?

What do you know about this cruise line and this role?

Describe a time you handled a difficult guest or colleague.

How do you manage long hours or working under pressure?

Are you comfortable being away from home for six to nine months at a time?

Do you have any concerns about the contract length or working conditions?

That last question is not a trick. Answer it honestly. If you have a genuine concern, the interview is the right place to raise it — not three weeks into your first contract.

What to Say About Salary

For most entry-level positions, the salary band is fixed. The agency or cruise line will tell you the rate, and there is not much room to negotiate. For specialist or management roles there is sometimes more flexibility, but I would not lead with salary in a first interview. Show them you want the role. The money conversation belongs after they want you.

What Happens After the Interview

If things go well, the next step is an offer — from the agency or directly from the cruise line. Only after you receive a confirmed offer should you proceed with the pre-employment requirements: the seafarer medical certificate and a criminal background check.

I want to be clear about this because I see candidates waste money getting these done upfront. Do not pay for a medical or a background check before you have an offer in writing. No legitimate agency or cruise line requires that.

One Last Thing

A cruise ship interview is not a final exam. The people interviewing you want to find candidates who will succeed. They are not trying to catch you out. Be genuine, be prepared, and show them you understand what the job actually involves.

If you are not sure you are ready, or want to talk through what to expect for your specific role — reach out.
