Put in your time, sign enough contracts, and eventually the promotions come. That is not how it works. Not on any ship I ever sailed on, and not on any ship operating today.

Advancement at sea is competitive. There are far more people wanting to move up than there are positions opening up. And the crew members who get promoted are not always the ones who have been around the longest. They are the ones who made themselves impossible to overlook.

I spent years at sea as an Executive Officer and F&B Director, and I watched this play out over and over. Some people signed contract after contract and barely moved. Others made it to supervisory roles within two or three contracts. The difference was rarely talent. It was almost always behavior.

Here is what actually moves people forward.

Your Supervisor Has to Think of You First

When a position opens up, your department head sends a recommendation to shoreside HR. That is how promotions on cruise ships work. Shoreside makes the final call — but the recommendation has to come from within the ship first. If your supervisor does not immediately think of you when that opening comes up, the opportunity goes to someone else. Often someone who might have less experience but made a stronger impression.

The question to ask yourself after every contract: would my supervisor recommend me without hesitating?

If you are not sure, that tells you something.

Performance Reviews Are Not a Formality

Most cruise lines conduct formal performance reviews — usually mid-contract and end-of-contract. Many crew sit through them and move on. The ones who advance treat them as an opening.

Before your review, think about what you want to say. What did you contribute? What went well? Where do you want to go next? Make your career intentions clear, because supervisors do not automatically know you are aiming for more. Telling them directly is not pushy. It is professional. And it puts your name in the right conversation.

After the review, ask specifically: what do I need to work on to be considered for the next level? Then do exactly that.

Re-Signing Matters More Than People Realize

Cruise lines invest in crew who stay. Training takes time. It costs money. When you sign your second and third contract with the same company, you signal reliability. That matters when promotions come up.

It also means your track record stays visible. Six strong contracts on file tells a much clearer story than a new face with an impressive CV. A department head recommending you for promotion needs confidence — and a visible track record gives them that.

Additional Qualifications — Done Right

For deck and engine crew, additional STCW certificates are often a strict requirement for advancement. Without the right certifications, the door simply does not open. The path in those departments is well-defined: get the certificates, log the sea time, meet the standards set by your flag state.

For hospitality and hotel crew, it is less rigid — but qualifications still help. Wine certifications like WSET are noticed in F&B. Bar management credentials carry weight. Language skills, especially strong English combined with a second language, can open doors that would otherwise stay closed.

And here is something a lot of crew overlook: if your ship uses a specific system — Fidelio, MICROS, or similar property management software — learn it properly. Go beyond the basics. Crew who can genuinely operate and troubleshoot the systems that run the operation are valuable in ways that go well beyond their job title. I saw this firsthand throughout my career, both at sea and during my years working with Micros-Fidelio. The crew who understood the tools stood out. Every time.

Cross-Department Knowledge Builds Your Reputation

One of the fastest ways to build a reputation on board is to be genuinely useful beyond your own department. If you are in F&B, understand what Housekeeping is dealing with on turnaround day. If you are in Guest Services, know how the galley operates during embarkation. Crew who see the ship as a whole — rather than just their corner of it — are the ones who get handed more responsibility.

You do not need to overstep. But showing genuine interest in how the operation works beyond your own job description gets noticed at every level.

Attitude Is Not a Soft Skill

I have seen it too many times. A highly capable crew member who could not manage themselves under pressure, and a slightly less experienced crew member who stayed steady, coachable, and reliable — and the second one got the promotion.

Life at sea is demanding. Schedules are long. Guests can be difficult. The quarters are small. How you handle all of that, day after day, is a direct measure of how you will handle more responsibility. No department head recommends someone for a senior role who is difficult to manage or unreliable when things get hard.

This is not about being cheerful all the time. It is about being the person your team can count on. Consistently.

Timing Is Real — But You Can Influence It

Some of advancement is timing. Positions have to open up. But you can influence this more than you think.

Make your career goals known to your supervisor — professionally, not repeatedly. Stay in contact with the Crew Services team. Re-sign with the same line. Build a track record across multiple contracts. And when an opportunity comes up for a lateral move — a different role that builds new skills rather than a straight step up — take it seriously before dismissing it.

Lateral moves that build your range often lead to faster upward movement later. The people who move up quickly are usually the ones who said yes to things that were not exactly what they had planned for.

One Last Thing

Nobody advances in isolation. The crew members who get promoted are the ones who built genuine relationships — with supervisors, with peers, with HR, with people in other departments. Not through politics. Just by being someone worth knowing and worth trusting.

At sea, your reputation follows you from ship to ship, contract to contract. Build it deliberately.

Wolfgang Juranek

Founder, CruiseCareer Pro | Retired Executive Officer & F&B Director | Former Director, Micros-Fidelio (Oracle) Fidelio Cruise Software

📩 Get in Touch

Have questions about getting hired on a cruise ship, or want your application personally reviewed — at no cost?
