They think the industry wants something specific to maritime — some set of skills that only comes from working at sea.

They are wrong. And they are underselling themselves.

The truth is that hotel experience — particularly in food and beverage, housekeeping, front desk, and guest relations — translates directly to what cruise ships need. In many departments, it is exactly what hiring teams look for. The gap is not in your qualifications. It is in how you present them.

Let me explain what I mean.

A Ship Is a Floating Hotel. Treat It Like One.

Running a cruise ship is not as foreign as it might seem from the outside. Strip away the ocean and the uniform, and what you have is a hotel — one that operates 24 hours a day with a captive guest population and a crew that lives on property. Every guest-facing service that exists in a hotel exists in some form on board. Same fundamentals. Different setting.

A waiter who can handle 80 covers during a hotel lunch rush will adapt to shipboard service faster than almost anyone with no hospitality background. A housekeeping supervisor who managed a team of 20 at a four-star property already thinks the way a cabin department thinks. A front desk agent at a busy resort has dealt with more complaint situations and guest quirks than many people give themselves credit for — and that maps directly to Guest Services or the Purser’s department.

The experience is there. What is usually missing is the framing.

Where Your Hotel Background Gives You a Real Edge

Not every ship department values hotel experience equally. These are the ones where it genuinely helps:

Food and Beverage

F&B is the largest department on any cruise ship — most crew, highest revenue, most hiring. If you have worked in hotel restaurants, bars, banqueting, or room service, you already know high-volume service, service recovery when things go wrong, and the stamina that comes with working back-to-back functions. Entry-level roles like Waiter, Bar Steward, and Assistant Bar Manager are realistic targets for experienced hotel F&B staff. You do not need to start from zero.

Housekeeping / Cabin Services

Hotel housekeeping experience transfers almost directly. The Cabin Steward role is one of the highest-volume positions on any cruise ship, and candidates from four or five-star properties with strong service cultures stand out. Turnaround times on ships can be tighter than in hotels, and the cabins are smaller — but the core skill set is the same. If you have supervisory experience, even better.

Guest Services / Purser’s Department

Front desk work in a hotel is excellent preparation for the Purser’s department. You already know how to handle check-in, billing disputes, and the kind of guest who speaks to you through gritted teeth while expecting you to smile. Ships call this Guest Services or the Purser’s department, and they prize exactly that composure and skill. Languages are a significant advantage here — if you speak two or more, flag that clearly on your application.

Hotel Management — Officer-Level Pathways

If you have several years of hotel management experience — GM, F&B Manager, Rooms Division — there are officer-level pathways on ships that may be accessible to you in time. But most cruise lines want some shipboard experience before placing candidates in senior management roles. Getting in at a supervisory level for your first contract and building from there is the realistic path. And once on board, the promotion track can move quickly for people who perform.

The Mistakes That Kill Hotel Applicants’ Chances

I see the same problems repeatedly. Most of them are fixable.

Generic hotel language on the CV

Hotel CVs are full of phrases like “provided outstanding guest experiences” and “maintained high service standards.” These say almost nothing to a cruise hiring manager reading two hundred applications. Get specific. What kind of property? How many covers per service? How large was your team? What standards did you work to? Numbers cut through the noise. “Service standards” does not. “Responsible for daily food service across a 380-cover hotel restaurant” does.

Not acknowledging the lifestyle

A cruise ship is not a hotel you can leave at the end of your shift. Contracts run from four to eight months. You live on board. You share a cabin, usually with one colleague. Your days off exist — but there is nowhere far to go. If your application reads like you just want a hotel job with a better view, that is a problem. Manning agencies and hiring teams want candidates who genuinely understand what they are signing up for. Show that you do.

Skipping the cover letter

Hotel industry applications rarely require a strong cover letter. Cruise applications do. It is often the only place in your application where you can explain why you want to work at sea, and why your hotel background qualifies you. A clear, honest, one-page cover letter can move an average application from the maybe pile to the yes pile. Do not skip it.

Applying directly to the cruise line

Most cruise ship hiring does not happen through cruise line websites. It happens through manning agencies. If you are spending all your time clicking Apply on Royal Caribbean’s careers page, you are going to have a long wait. Find the right manning agency for the department and role you are targeting, and go through them. There is a full guide on this at Cruise-Career-Pro.com — Manning Agencies Explained — which will walk you through exactly where to look and how to approach them.

How to Position Your CV for a Shipboard Role

A few things that make a real difference:

Lead with the property type and scale. “Waiter at a 450-room five-star resort hotel serving 600 guests daily” tells a cruise recruiter far more than “Waiter at XYZ Hotel.” Context matters.

Highlight multi-tasking and high-volume experience. Ships run with lean crews relative to the service they deliver. If you have managed high-volume service with limited resources, say so — specifically.

Mention any international exposure. Worked with international guests? In a multi-national team? Cruise ships are among the most international working environments on the planet, both in terms of guests and crew. If you have navigated different cultural expectations, that is relevant experience.

Be clear that you understand the contract model. A line in your cover letter — acknowledging that you are prepared for a four-to-six month contract and the live-aboard nature of shipboard life — signals maturity. Many applicants miss this entirely. It costs nothing to include and can only help.

A Realistic Word of Caution

I want to be honest with you here, because that is the point of this blog.

The transition from hotel to ship is not always instant. For some roles, you will be competing against candidates who already have a contract or two behind them — and that experience carries weight with agencies and hiring managers. Your hotel background is a genuine asset, but it may mean starting at a level slightly below what you held on land, at least for your first contract.

That is not a reason to hold back. It is simply something to go in with clear eyes about. Your first contract is where you prove the concept. From there, promotion on cruise ships can move faster than most people expect — provided you perform and make yourself known. But that is a topic for another post.

The main thing I want to leave you with is this: do not disqualify yourself before anyone else has had the chance to. Your hotel experience is relevant. It is wanted. It just needs to be presented in a way that makes that obvious — in the right format, through the right channels, with enough specificity that a hiring manager can immediately see what you bring.

If you are not sure how your CV reads to someone on the other side of that process, send it to me.
